CENTRAL VIEW for Monday, March 9, 2020

by William Hamilton, Ph.D.

Down came the order: Shelter in place!

Before the South Carolina Democrat Primary Election, the Biden campaign was on life support. Biden finished 4th in Iowa, 5th in New Hampshire and 2nd in Nevada. Opinion columnists, to include this one, assumed the revelations about the Biden family’s shady involvement with the previous Ukrainian regime and with the current Red Chinese regime would end Joe Biden’s shot at the Democratic Party’s nomination. Not to mention Joe Biden’s shaky mental state and his nearly terminal gaffe-in-mouth disease. But I was wrong.

After South Carolina and just before Super Tuesday, the Democrat Establishment, from former President Obama on down, issued an order to the lesser Democrat candidates: Drop out, support Joe Biden, and "shelter-in-place" while we try to make the best of the General Election defeat that is almost sure to come in November.

What turned the Democrat’s primary race upside down was not the weakness of the Biden campaign but the strong showing of Comrade Bernie Sanders and the growing realization that an old-line Marxist might lead the Democrat Party to a catastrophic defeat in November.

Because the stated purpose of the far Left is to destroy Washington’s Ancien Régime and replace it with a socialist utopia, the Democrat Establishment decided to throw Comrade Bernie, AOC, and scores of young radicals under the bus.

Why? Because Comrade Bernie’s defeat in the General Election would create a GOP tsunami, sweeping dozens of governorships, congressional seats, and state legislatures (and their power over redistricting) into GOP hands for decades to come. But with Joe Biden as their nominee, the down-ballot losses would not be nearly as severe and leave open the hope of keeping Nancy Pelosi as House Speaker and even putting Chuck Schumer in charge of the U.S. Senate.

But, unless a Black Swan event like the Coronovirus or an economic collapse can be pinned on President Trump, Joe Biden’s chances of defeating President Trump in the General Election are dubious, at best. The 78-year-old Biden needs a young, female running mate. Preferably, an ethic and religious minority 39-year-old Iraq war veteran who is good on television. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard comes to mind.

Another Democrat Establishment asset is Michael Bloomberg. Despite being run over by a fake Cherokee in a debate, Bloomberg will spend more millions helping Joe Biden and down-ballot Democrats to hold onto their seats and maybe even increase their numbers. The same way that Bloomberg dollars turned Colorado’s General Assembly into a Democrat-majority, anti-2nd Amendment legislative body.

What about Elizabeth Warren, the former socialist/feminist candidate? Does she throw her support to Comrade Bernie? Or, does she support Joe Biden and resume her place around the Democrat Establishment’s campfire? And what if Coronavirus overwhelms the Trump Campaign and Alzheimer’s takes out Joe Biden? A Sanders/Warren ticket might win.

Call this old-fashioned, smoke-filled, back-room, politics. But it shows that the Democrat Establishment and its Deep State allies are strategic thinkers. Military doctrine says the Retrograde Operation (retreat) is the most difficult maneuver of all. But, sometimes, living to fight another day is the only alternative.

[Finally, I note with sadness the passing of Joe W. McBride, Jr., the editor and publisher of The Anadarko Daily News. Honest and objective, Joe was among America’s best.]
